Buck and Juanita Coulson Collection of Filk Material
Collection Organization
Collection consists of audiotape masters for much of the Off Centaur label's catalog, including live and studio performances for releases beginning in 1980 and ending in the late 1980s, as well as many of the zines and songbooks published by Off Centaur. In addition to commercially-released material, some of the audiotapes also contain non-album tracks, alternate takes, and other material that was not released commercially. There is scant accompanying paper documentation for the reels, containing recording dates, personnel, and notes by audio engineers, though this documentation does not exist for all reels. In addition to the audio content, there is also material that documents publications in the filk community in the 1980s, many of which are related to Off Centaur's recordings, including submissions for zines likely published through Off Centaur and/or Firbird Arts, as well as zines, printed convention materials, and other publications.
Off Centaur Master Recordings, 1980s
Master recordings from Off Centaur Publications, accompanied by scant recording logs and other paper documentation. Most master recordings only contain material for either side A or side B of the resulting commercial recordings. Some recordings also contain outtakes, alternate versions, and unreleased material.
The collection contains several different types of master recordings, so there are titles that are represented by multiple tapes. Items listed here may be original masters (generally 2-track, 1/4-inch audiotape recorded at 15 inches per second), duplicating maters (used for high speed duplication of cassette tapes, usually 4-track, 1/2 inch audio tape recorded at 7.5 inches per second), and original recordings (4 or 8-track, 1/4 or 1/2-inch audiotape recorded at varying speeds. The type of master recording is indicated in the title of each item, where possible.
The series also includes two reels that were part of the catalogue of Firebird Arts and Music, founded by Teri Lee and Andrea Mitchell after Off Centaur dissolved in 1988.
