Biographical / Historical

Predecessors of the Lykens United Methodist Church originally met in a church located in Buljo just south of Lykens in 1880. This church was known as the "Greenwood Church". In 1893 this building was moved to Lykens where it became known as the Lykens Evangelical Church. This church was completely destroyed by a tornado in 1937 but an abandoned United Brethren Church in Benton was purchased and moved to Lykens where it was remodeled. In 1946 the Evangelical Church united with the United Brethren and the church became known as the Lykens Evangelical United Brethren Church. Another merger with the Methodist Church in 1968 resulted in the name being changed to Lykens United Methodist Church.

The Concord Methodist Church in Brokensword, Ohio had its beginnings prior to the Civil War when a log church was erected in 1850. This church was dismantled in 1862 by opposing sides of the Civil War. Upon the conclusion of the Civil War a new church was erected in what at the time was known as Portersville and today is known as Brokensword. The Concord Church was part of a circuit with Tabor, Middletown, West Union, North Union and later Lemert. The church was discontinued in 1966.

The Lykens United Methodist Church closed its doors on June 30, 2006. The records of both churches were turned over to Grace United Methodist Church in Bucyrus at this time.

The above history was compiled based on information provided by Carol Holliger, archivist, Archives of Ohio United Methodism, Beeghley Library, Ohio Wesleyan University.
