Ship History

The CYPRUS was built as American Shipbuilding Company Hull #353 at Lorain, Ohio, in 1907. It was commissioned by Pickands-Mather & Company of Cleveland, and owned/operated by their subsidiary Lackawanna Steamship Company. On October 11, 1907, the CYPRUS encountered a moderate-strength gale and was lost, only 21 days after launch. The vessel was headed to Buffalo, New York, from Superior, Wisconsin, with a cargo of iron ore. Out of the 23 crew members aboard, only one survived. The wreck of the CYPRUS was accidentally discovered in August 2007 by a team from the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society who were searching for the wreck of the D.M. CLEMSON.
