Scope and Contents
The records of Service Local 3 include regular and executive board meeting minutes, incoming and outgoing correspondence, negotiations, agreements with employers, annual financial reports, audits, and a Service Employees Newsletter. Both the agreements and the minutes are fairly complete. Agreements reveal the Service Local's progress in negotiations over the years and the minutes are available not only for the executive board but also for the regular meetings of the hotel and motel employees, office building and department store employees, window cleaners, and janitors.
The executive board minutes extend from 1949-1965 and the minutes of the regular meetings of the various groups document the years 1950-1965. Incoming and outgoing correspondence, from 1944-1965, is very scattered, and most of it pertains to routine union business. The collection also includes material about negotiations from 1962-1965, a large number of agreements with employers in and around Toledo from 1939-1970, annual financial reports from 1957-1964, an audit taken in 1960, and the Newsletter from 1971-1973.
Biographical / Historical
A fire which occurred in 1940 or 1941 destroyed almost all of Service Local 3's records. It is difficult, therefore, to ascertain the exact date of the organization. According to the Toledo City Directories, the Building Service Employees Union, Local 3 first appeared in 1936. Also because of the fire, it is difficult to relate the beginning aspects, membership and officers of this union.
Further information may be obtained by contacting Richard A. Bowles, Financial Secretary at the Local's offices, 616 and a half Adams Street, Toledo, Ohio.
