The collection pretains to Dr. Carol Martin's research into the craze of dance marathons that occured during the early years of the Great Depression. It includes audio and printed interviews, research materials and manuscripts. Also included are a scrapbook and other materials related to Dr. Martin's participation as a historical consultant for the Broadway musical Steel Pier.
This collection will be of interest to those who are also studying 20th century fads, including but not limited to dance marathons.
The materials in this collection are unprocessed, however they are available to researchers.
Biographical / Historical
Carol Martin is a Professor of Drama at New York University. Her books include Theatre of the Real and Dance Marathons: Performing American Culture of the 1920s and 1930s. She is the Editor of Dramaturgy of the Real on the World Stage, A Sourcebook of Feminist Theatre, and the co-editor with Henry Bial of Brecht Sourcebook. She is the Guest Editor of two special issues of TDR, “Performing the City” (2015) and “Documentary Theatre (2006).” She has contributed essays on contemporary theatre and theory to national and international journals including Theatre Journal, Theatre Arts (Japan), TDR, Peripeti, and Theatre Arts China. Martin's essays and interviews have been translated into Turkish, French, Polish, Chinese, Romanian, and Japanese.
