These images record changes in vessel technology from the Viking era of c. 1000 to boats of 1988. Comparisons can be made between rigging specifications for sailing vessels of different centuries. This collection is composed of 766 35 mm photographic slides of Great Lakes Vessels. These slides were taken from 1980 to 1993 by William P. Roest in various locations around the Great Lakes, in both the United States and Canada. A large number of the slides were taken in the Soo area or on the St. Mary’s River near Round Island or Lime Island.
