Biographical / Historical

The push to form a Catholic parish in Paulding began in 1879 when the pastor of Antwerp made an effort to build a church in the town. The church was not built and in 1890 a small town, Latty, which was only three miles away, built a church. This delayed the establishment of a Station or Mission in Paulding. It was not until 1892 that Paulding was made a Station of Payne. In 1893, land was purchased and St. Joseph's church building was completed in 1896.

In 1901, St. Joseph Catholic Church received their first resident pastor. In that same year the parish of Latty became a Mission of Paulding. In 1916, the church building in Latty was destroyed by fire and the Mission closed permanently two years later.

On December 31, 1925 a fire destroyed the church building of St. Joseph. Mass was said at a nearby hall until a new church could be built. In 1927, the new church was completed.

St. Joseph is currently a sister parish of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Payne, Ohio.
