Biographical / Historical

St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marblehead, Ohio, began as a station of the Sandusky Catholic Church, Holy Angels Church, in 1842 and was served by Father Projectus Machebeuf. For the next 24 years it served as a station of various Catholic churches throughout northern Ohio.

It was not until 1866 that it became a mission, under Father John Koehn, and a small stone church was built. It primarily served the Irish, German, and French fisherman and farmers that had moved to the territory.

In 1889, a larger building was erected on a different site. It served as a combination church and school. In 1892, St. Joseph became a parish under the resident pastor, Father Francis Hroch.

In 1917, the most recent church was built upon the site of the second church. The parochial school that had been operating since 1889 was closed at the end of the 1968 school year.
