Biographical / Historical

The German parish of St. Joseph Catholic Church began as a Station of St. Alphonsus in Lima in 1844. In 1845, the parish built their first church. Before the church was built, mass was said in the English-speaking church of Tiffin, St. Mary. Because of conflicts between the English-speaking and German-speaking congregations St. Joseph was given permission to build their own church.

Between 1846 and 1851, St. Joseph was served as a Mission by New Riegel and Thompson. In 1852, the parish received their first resident pastor, Father John Uhlmann.

In 1860, the parish's first church was torn down and a new one was built. This second church was struck by lightening and destroyed by fire in 1934. In 1935, their current church was built.

Since 1935, there have been many renovations made to the church and the congregation has grown steadily in numbers.
