Biographical / Historical

Sacred Heart Catholic Church was established in 1883. It was established by a petition from one hundred German families that resided on the east side of the Maumee River. Originally, they attended the German Catholic Church, St. Mary Catholic Church that was located on the west side of the river. Often those that lived on the east side could not attend Mass due to weather or poor bridge conditions. The bishop approved the petition and in 1883 they constructed their first church. In the same year the parish built a school and a rectory. Their first resident pastor was Reverend John Thein.

In 1900, a fire destroyed their church. The parish began building a church that same year. To avoid a large debt the parish built the church slowly, over the course of several years. The new church was damaged by fire in 1975. The parish had to remodel and redecorate their church again.
