Scope and Contents

The records of the Altrusa Club, Fostoria, Ohio, include minutes, officer reports, and financial reports, dating from 1982-1980. Correspondence includes letters received upon becoming a chartered member of Altrusa International in 1964, and routine correspondence dating from 1975-1985. Initiation services and orientation packets for new members date from the late-1970 through the mid-1980s. Files documenting the revolving scholarship fund and Club nominations for District Five awards exist for 1976-1984.

Club yearbooks, 1969-1989, document the programs, officers and membership. Newsletters, both Chapter and District are available, although not complete, for the years 1965-1985. An oversized scrapbook which includes minutes, programs, yearbooks, news clippings and newsletters for the year 1977-1979, provides a very complete picture of the Club's purpose and activities.

Biographical / Historical

Altrusa International is a service organization for women in professions or holding executive positions in business. Community service is an important component of Altrusa International.

In May 1964 the Altrusa Club of Fostoria, Ohio was organized and officially chartered on December 10, 1964, with thirty-eight members. The first year activities of this Club included assisting with the Heart Fund Drive, ensuring that vocational counseling services were available to the local schools, and initiating the "Let Freedom Ring" project. Over the next forty years, the Club initiated a revolving scholarship fund, supported various activities at nursing homes, purchased subscriptions to the local library and equipment for the local hospital, sponsored students to Buckeye Girls State and various camps, and given financial support to many Fostoria community organizations.

The Fostoria Altrusa Club has increased its membership over the years and continues to be an active participant in District Five activities.
