Biographical / Historical

Corpus Christi Catholic Church began as the Newman Club in 1932. It was established to give support and religious instruction to Catholic students attending the University of Toledo. The Newman Club is an organization that is found on the campuses of state universities nationwide. Though the club did not have a chapel, they did have a Chaplain. Their first Chaplain was Dr. Ignatius Kelly.

The Newman Club became Corpus Christi Catholic Church on August 14, 1970 with a decree from Bishop John A. Donovan. Their first resident priest was Father Robert Kirtland. Corpus Christi is a personal parish, which means that it is a non-national and non-territorial parish. It is the only one in the city of Toledo with a resident pastor.
