The Hartman Family Papers consist of photocopies of correspondence between members of the Hartman family dating from 1891 through 1974, with some family photographs ranging from 1939 through 1977.

The letters between Charles and his sister Mabel comprise the bulk of the collection and primarily deal with family affairs and accounts of events in Napoleon, Ohio. The collection also includes poems, articles, and family photographs.

Biographical / Historical

The Hartman Family Papers consist primarily of correspondence between members of the family of Melissa Gardner and Daniel Vinton Hartman, particularly two of their children Charles Jacob Hartman and Mabel Clair Hartman Combs, ranging from 1891 through 1960.

Daniel Vinton Hartman was one of the ten children of Samuel Hartman and Lucy Vinton, who eventually settled in Henry County, Ohio. Daniel's children included Charles, Gertrude, Emma, Harry, and Mabel. Gertrude married into the Kryder family, Emma married a LeRoy, and Mabel married a Combs.

Charles Jacob Hartman, the primary correspondent in the collection, was born Apr. 6, 1869, his sister, Mabel Clair, was born Feb. 1, 1885. The Hartman family lived in Napoleon, Ohio, and Charles' letters to his sister, living in San Francisco, report on local activities and people.
