Details about the specific operations of the program, and the information being taught, can be found in the bookstore packets created for students (late 1980s-early 2000s), and the instructor manuals, sample evaluated essays, sample assignments, and guides to portfolio assessment from the late 1990s-2011.

Biographical / Historical

The purpose of Freshman English - later the General Studies Writing program - at Bowling Green State University has been to ensure adequate written communication skills among its students. Through the use of placement tests for incoming freshmen, students were placed into GSW classes based on their writing abilities and the types of writing skills needed for their future success. In 2019, the GSW program became known as the University Writing Program.
