Scope and Contents

The records of the Wood County Retired Teachers Association consist primarily of informal scrapbooks with photographs, programs, and clippings, with one notebook that includes typed minutes for the period from 1973 to 1989.

The largest grouping of materials is the loose obituary clippings that were gathered to provide information for annual memorial recognition. This grouping, organized chronologically, includes information about teachers of elementary, secondary, and higher education levels from all over Wood County.

Biographical / Historical

The Wood County Retired Teachers Association was established during the period around the fall of 1968 through the spring of 1969, through the efforts of O.J. Frederick, Northwest District Director of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association and Irene Barckert, a retired teacher in Bowling Green.

Although records were not kept for the early period, a typed history in the collection indicates that there were initially 39 Charter Members in 1969. The Association membership grew steadily to the point where there were 330 members by 1996.

Through dues assessments the Association maintains a small fund that provides the resources to donate books each year to the Wood County District Public Library. Other activities of the WCRTA include keeping members informed of legislation and needs related to pension benefits and health-care coverage. On a more social level, the Association also conducts regular spring and fall luncheons and informal meetings such as a summer picnic, an evening at the theater, and a Christmas gathering, as well as maintaining a Travel Committee to support members who have an interest in travel during their retirement.
