Scope and Contents

This collection documents the creation of the Asian Studies program at BGSU as well as its activities and operations through the late 1990s. Included in the collection are meeting minutes, correspondence and annual reports, as well as information on internships, study abroad opportunitites, conferences, workshops as well as grant and other funding opportunities. A second accession of materials (boxes 10-13) overlap somewhat in content with the earlier boxes. Overall the records provide insight into the creation of the program and the types of opporunities that were available to students of the program.

Biographical / Historical

The Asian Studies program at Bowling Green State University was established in the early 1970s - with the first classes being taught in the fall 1972 quarter. The program grew slowly, having only 20-25 graduates by 1985. The program continues to be, however, one of the few such programs offered by Ohio universities. In the program, students gain a broad knowledge of the culture and societies of East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia; and in-depth knowledge of one of the East Asian countries (Japan, China, and Korea); and basic conversational and reading skills of an Asian language.
