Biographical / Historical
Mortar Board was founded in 1918 as the first national organization honoring senior college women. At Bowling Green State University, the similarly focused Cap and Gown was formed around 1942-1943. In 1969 it became a chapter of Mortar Board. Its full title (added in 1989) is The Fayetta M. Paulsen Cap and Gown Chapter of Mortar Board; named after the administrator who helped bring Mortar Board to the BGSU campus. The organization began to admit men in 1976 in order to comply with Title IX.
