Ann Arbor Car Ferries collection

This collection mainly consists of research materials gathered by Grant Brown during the development of his book Ninety Years Crossing Lake Michigan: The History of the Ann Arbor Car Ferries. Materials include annual reports, legal documents, logbook excerpts, publications, photographs, notes, and articles. An extensive file of newspaper articles cover the history and operations of Ann Arbor Railroad Company (AARC) and Michigan Interstate Railway Company (MIRC), of the people affected by them, and the Lake Michigan region. Notes from interviews with over 60 individuals provide firsthand knowledge of the inner workings of the AARC and MIRC. A large amount of materials on this topic from numerous repositories are centralized in this collection, providing significant research value.

The collection is rounded out by materials from Arthur C. Frederickson that were not included in the existing GLMS 16 - Arthur C. Frederickson Collection held by HCGL. Subject files and a card file provide historical information on the history of vessels, as well as limited information on other maritime subjects. Subject files may include notes, newspaper clippings, photographs, or magazine cutouts.
