Scope and Contents

The William C. Eichelberger Papers consist of one-half linear foot of correspondence, genealogical files, memoirs, reports, and newspapers. The correspondence includes three letters and a Christmas card. Of interest are photocopies of two letters written by Joseph Eichelberger, dated 1826. The genealogical files are taken from a family Bible and provide information on the family from the 1700s to the early 1900s.

Of most research value in this collection is the memoir of G.M. Eichelberger, which largely documents his Civil War service. Information on Isaac Carman and his Congressional Medal of Honor is also of interest. Additional military history is provided by the medical reports filed by William L. Carman, uncle to William C., while serving with the medical corps during World War I.

Biographical / Historical

The Eichelberger and Carman families are documented in this collection. William C. Eichelberger's great-grandfather, Joseph, lived from 1795 to 1854 and resided in Maryland. He married Elizabeth Hoke and together they had nine children. One of their sons, Michael, lived from 1831 to 1892 and married Anna Favorite. One of their sons, Claude, is the father of William C. Eichelberger. Claude lived from 1871 to 1938 and married Charlotte Carman. William C. Eichelberger resides, as of 1994, in Spencerville, Ohio, and has no offspring.

Grayson M. Eichelberger, great-uncle of William C., enlisted as a private soldier in Company B, Maryland Infantry, in 1862 and served throughout the Civil War. During that service he was promoted to sergeant, and then to First Lieutenant of Company D on November 17, 1864. On April 2, 1865, he was promoted to captain by brevet, and confirmed in that rank on April 13, 1865, for Company G. His memoir is included in this collection. Isaac H. Carman, grandfather of William C., joined the 48th Ohio Infantry and earned a Congressional Medal of Honor at the Battle of Vicksburg.
