Content Description

The records of the Girl Scouts Senior Troop 109 from Bowling Green, Ohio give an overview of the trips, accomplishments, and activities of the group, mainly from 1951 through 1965. The larger series in the collection covers the 1957 Trip to Europe, where the troop traversed several European countries and met with other Girl Scouts from all over the globe. Over 480 slides capture Lois (Richard) Main’s experience from the trip. Additionally, several scrapbooks, journals, and other publications provide more details for the activites of the troop and Europe at the time. The second series includes other activities and records from mostly 1951-1965. Over 48 slides capture the activites of the troop, seven songbooks and a record represent some of the music of the Girl Scouts at the time, two more scrapbooks relay the travels and accomplishments of Troop 109 (including a 1954 trip to Chicago), and some mixed materials include artifacts from the 1957 National Convention (an annual Girl Scouts of the USA convention in Philadelphia).

Biographical / Historical

The Girl Scouts of America (GSA) was founded on March 12, 1912, and a troop from Bowling Green was invited to join the Toledo Council in 1918. The Girl Scout’s mission centers around building the courage, confidence, and character of the girls in the organization. Troop 109 was active in Bowling Green in the 1950s and 1960s. We know through this collection that they went on several trips, including one to Europe in 1957, another to Chicago in 1954, and another to the 1957 annual Girl Scouts of America convention in Philadelphia. They listened to and likely sang some music provided by GSA and that they participated in other activities together.

More information can be found on the current activities and goals of the Girl Scouts of the USA on their website.

Language of Materials

Materials predominantly in English. Some of the songs within the songbooks are written in other primarily European languages like Finnish, German, French, Swedish, etc.

Arrangement

The records are arranged in two series, one of which has been further arranged into three subseries: 1. 1957 Trip to Europe (Subseries 1 Slides maintain their original order, Subseries 2 Scrapbooks and Journals were arranged alphabetically, Subseries 3 Publications were arranged alphabetically); 2. Troop 109 Records (arranged by topic of the materials; slides, music materials, scrapbooks, and National Convention materials were all kept together within their respective small groupings).

All of the slides maintained their original order and number from the magazines they were stored in. Blank spots or missing slides were skipped over in the numbering, and the outer labeling (which mostly seems to match the pictures, though there are some discrepancies) was kept in the respective folders.
