Abstract
This collection contains papers relating to the Buchanan and Boyer families of Ohio, and the Ladies Aid Society of the Deshler Church of the Brethren, of which a Buchanan family member was a member. The collection consists of genealogies, photographs, scrapbooks, diaries, notebooks, correspondence, financial records, meeting minutes, etc. dating from circa 1890 to 2014. The collection was compiled by family historian Nancy Buchanan, of Hoytville, Ohio.

Content Description
This collection contains materials belonging to and pertaining to the history of the Buchanan and Boyer families of Wood, Henry, and Hancock counties, Ohio. Materials are largely photographic or textual, comprising photographs, cabinet cards, photocopies, diaries, minutes, correspondence, financial records, clippings, scrapbooks, publications, and related printed matter. Among other formats scattered throughout the collection are tintypes, negatives, and artifacts such as a crucifix, ephemera, and blueprints.
The first series contains organizational activity materials such as blueprints, accounts, and meeting minutes from the Ladies Aid Society of the Church of the Brethren in Deshler, Ohio, between the period of 1928 and 1987.
The second series is comprised of materials documenting the history of the families themselves. Series 2 Subseries 1 (Family Binders) contains curated genealogy information and photographs of key members of the family history, such as Wilda/Max Regal and Pearl/Webb Buchanan, as well as thematic content such as reunion gatherings and family homes.
Series 2 Subseries 2 (Photographs) contains photographs, largely of unidentified individuals before 1920 but featuring some named individuals and groups such as the Buchanan, Boyer, Regal, Brown, and Fish/Fisher families.
Series 2 Subseries 3 (Textual Materials) contains other personal materials like scrapbooks, diaries, and songbooks, etc., belonging to various members of the Buchanan/Boyer family, such as Maxine Regal, Mabel Buchanan, and Pearl Boyer, between circa 1900 and 1938.
Content Warning: A few folders” include printed articles relating to child abuse (“From the Buchanan Side” and “Howard Buchanan”).
Biographical / Historical
The Buchanan and Boyer families hail from Wood, Henry, and Hancock counties in Ohio, including such towns as Deshler and Hoytville. Prominent members of the family featured in this collection include family historian Nancy Buchanan (1936-2019); her parents Robert Webster “Webb” Clay Buchanan Jr. (1901-1964) and Nevada Pearl (née Boyer) Buchanan (1871-1972); Webb’s parents Robert Webster “Webb” Buchanan (1872-1942) and Ellen Eleanora (née Price) Buchanan (1876-1952); Webb’s siblings Rufus Buchanan (1909-1948), Ruth Buchanan (1911-1978), Howard Buchanan (1906-1995), Mabel Buchanan (1899-1954), Wilda (née Price) Regal (1892-1981); and Wilda’s daughter Maxine Regal (1914-1962).
The primary compiler of the collection, Nancy Lee Ann Buchanan, was born on February 18, 1936 and was a 1954 graduate of Jackson Township School. Nancy had a longtime career as a Wood County educator (serving a range of roles from teacher to principal to curriculum adviser), was a leader in local civic and political organizations, and was a lifelong member of Church of the Brethren. She died at age 82 in February 2019.

The records are arranged in two series, one of which has been further arranged into three subseries. The series and subseries arrangement of the records is as follows:

In an effort to assist user access and preserve groupings unknown to the processor, the original order of items and files has been preserved where possible, except for some items which have been moved to better fit with related materials.
Items in binders/envelopes/packaging were taken out for preservation purposes but original arrangement and naming was maintained wherever possible.
Separated Materials
A limited number of duplicates, picture frames, packaging, and non-personal/informative ephemera were removed.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections by Wendy Schortgen, niece of Nancy Buchanan, on May 21, 2019.
