Abstract

This collection of photographs and genealogical records centers on Marian Rose Shufeldt Jeffers Kurz and Carla Von Kurz, who resided in the Grand Rapids and Toledo, Ohio, areas. Few items are dated, but they primarily fall in the period of 1930-1980. The collection contains photographs (color and black and white), genealogical records, scrapbooks, school papers, and correspondence.

Content Description

The Marian Jeffers Kurz Metcalf Family Papers span the years 1890 to 2001. The bulk of the collection is comprised of family photographs and genealogical records. These photographs provide insight into the familial relationships, celebrations, and travels of the Jeffers Kurz Metcalf family. Complementing these photographs, the collection also includes photograph albums, news clippings, school records, and correspondence of various family members.

Additionally, this collection includes photographs documenting Carla Von Kurz’ career at 1560 WTOD, Toledo’s first country music radio station. Pictured are local musicians as well as national celebrities such as Waylon Jennings, Charli Pride, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Ricky Skaggs, and members of the Oak Ridge Boys during performances in Toledo, Ohio.

Biographical / Historical

Marian Jeffers Kurz Metcalf was born to Floyd and Lena (Tubbs) Shufeldt of Maumee in 1918 but was given up for adoption as an infant; Elmer and Bessie (Finkenbiner) Jeffers of Grand Rapids adopted her. In 1937, Marian married Carl George Kurz (1918-1964) of Toledo and the couple had one daughter, Carla, living in toledo until Carl died in 1964. In 1969, Marian married Raymond A. Metcalf (1918-2003) of Bowling Green. She died in 2001.

Carla Von Kurz was born in 1938 and graduated from Whitmer High School in 1956. She lived in Toledo, and Bowling Green before relocating to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she passed away in 2009.

Separated Materials

A small number of out-of-scope photographs and several family Bibles were returned to the donor.

This collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections by Judy Peper of Grand Rapids, Ohio, in May 2024.
