Collection Overview

Scope and Contents

The Fraley collection offers three types of information to researchers interested in the history of the Great Lakes region. Fleet logs for the Great Lakes Steamship Company and the Wilson Marine Transit Company provide lists of officers for these companies serving on their vessels. Names, positions held, vessel assignments, dates of employment and performance evaluations are included for 1937-1966.

Another resource for examination in thiscollection is a series of course materials used by students at the U.S. Maritime Service Officers' School, the Lake Carriers' Association Engineers' School and the West Side Institute for Technology. Lesson assignments, course materials, and notes are included for scattered dates from 1941 to 1967. Also included is a broadside memorializing the crew of the EDMUND FITZGERALD from ca. 1975.

The final type of records included is a set of 493 photographs likely taken by Fraley during her career with Wilson Marine Transit Company. The photographs span 1967-1971. Common subjects include photos of Great Lakes vessels from ashore or aboard other ships, crew members, ports, and shore facilities. A sizable portion of them are identified.
