Miscellaneous naval architectural drawings collection
Collection Organization
This collection consists of various architectural drawings held by the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes which are not part of the American Shipbuilding Company and Predecessors records or Great Lakes Engineering Works records. Some plans for canal locks, docks, and equipment are present. Notable among them are the Erie Marine, Inc. shipyard in Erie, PA, pre-Seaway locks on the St. Lawrence River, and ore docks at Duluth.
The bulk of the collection is made up of plans for Great Lakes vessels, as well as a smaller number for non-Great Lakes vessels. A significant amount of plans are available for Great Lakes vessels built at off-lake yards, such as in Portland, Oregon, and Sparows Point, Maryland. Engine and boiler drawings are present from well-known manufacturers Samuel F. Hodge and the Frontier Brass & Iron Works, both of Detroit. This collection also contains the oldest naval architectural drawing in the HCGL, which is an inboard profile for the Oswegatchie, built at the Ogdensburg, New York, Marine Railway in 1867.
