Content Description
The Bowling Green Senior Citizens Club records document the club’s activities and its community outreach from 1955 to 2007, with the years between 1970-1995 documented most comprehensively. The collection contains multiple scrapbooks and folders of newspaper clippings and photographs about their active participation in the Bowling Green community. Meeting minutes between the years of 1970 to the mid-1990s make up a significant portion of the collection and provide insight into the life of the club. Also contained within the collection are records outlining governing standards and procedures during meetings (including songs and special procedures for holiday meetings).
Biographical / Historical
The Bowling Green Senior Citizens Club was founded in 1955 after both the Bowling Green Soroptimist Club and the City of Bowling Green recognized an opportunity to provide recreation to county residents over sixty years of age. Established as a self-governing body, the purpose of the Senior Citizen’s Club was to brighten the retirement years by providing opportunities for making new friendships, and participating in activities such as music, games, bingo, crafts, potlucks, and socializing.
The Club held its first meeting on June 21, 1955 at the Shelter House in the City Park, with thirty-nine joining as charter members. By 1957, there were 250 members, with 35-75 attending each meeting. Through time, the Club moved between a number of locations, eventually (after 1968) operating out of the ground floor of 151 West Court Street, a space they obtained through a partnership with the City of Bowling Green.
The City’s Recreation Department has also provided services for seniors through the years, often partnering with the Senior Citizens Club and diversifying programs. Over the years the Club hosted potlucks and holiday parties, participated in community parades, sponsored card parties and a variety of other activities.
This organization was active until around 2007. After 2007 it appears that the city recreation department, the Wood County Committee on Aging, a 501(c)3, and other organizations fulfill many of the same needs in improving the quality of life for older adults.
