Scope and Contents

The Harvey Dean Miner papers consists of 0.92 cubic feet of materials revolving around the industrial arts career of Harvey Miner from circa 1935 to 1975. The collection includes subject files, printed materials, maps and photographs.

The subject files include industrial arts project plans and industrial art facilities and programs development plans at schools throughout Ohio, including McClure, Otsego and Weston. Floor plans for these facilities are included in the map section. There are also numerous articles written by Miner addressing several industrial art issues. Photographs in the collection show the changes instituted by Miner in industrial arts programs in “before” and “after” shots of various school industrial art facilities. Any one interested in industrial arts education would find this collection a very useful research tool in their investigations. There are also numerous photographic negatives of his travels, places and people around Tontogany, and images related to his career at BGSU.

Biographical / Historical

Harvey Dean Miner (1910-1998) was an influential industrial arts instructor at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio, for forty years. He was born January 7, 1910, in Tontogany, Ohio, to Hugh V. and Mabel Shanower Miner. Harvey received a bachelor of science in education, specializing in industrial arts, in 1932 from Bowling Green State University where he later became an instructor in 1935. He later went on to earn a master's degree from Ohio University in 1947 and studied at the doctoral level at Western Reserve and Wayne State Universities.

Miner established new industrial art technology facilities and programs throughout schools in Ohio including Weston, McClure, Florida, Wauseon, Anthony Wayne and Graham Local High School in St. Paris. In 1959 he was selected as a member of a team to establish technical education facilities in Eastern Nigeria under the sponsorship of the U.S. Government, where he and his family resided for two years.

During his tenure at Bowling Green he authored many articles and published a book entitled Exploring Patternmaking & Foundry. He retired from Bowling Green State University in 1975 as Associate Professor Emeritus. Harvey was considered by many to be "an excellent educator, cabinetmaker, carpenter, and patternmaker." He died on June 20, 1998 in Bowling Green.

The donation of these papers to the Center for Archival Collections was arranged through the cooperation of Beverly M. Miner of Bowling Green, Ohio, on December 4, 2007.
