Scope and Contents

The first portion of this collection consists mainly of agreements between maritime labor unions and steel production and shipping companies spanning 1914-1983, with most falling in the 1960s-1970s. Many large companies including Inland Steel, U.S. Steel, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and American Shipbuilding Company are represented. Major unions featured include the National Maritime Union, Seafarer's International Union, Licensed Tugmen's Protective Association, and the United Steel Workers of America and their Great Lakes Local 5000.

The other segment of the collections is made up of runs of union newspapers, mainly from the 1960s, although a few issues from the 1940s and one from 1939 are also present. Titles included are The Pilot, The Seafarer's Log, and The Great Lakes Seafarer.
