Raymond Spitulski collection

One of the strengths of the Raymond Spitulski Collection is its materials pertaining to the Jeep Corporation. The years documented by the collection, 1935 to 1983, saw the Toledo, Ohio Jeep Plant under three different owners: Willys-Overland, Kaiser, and American Motors Corporation. The records illustrate Local 12's changing relationship with management through the agreements, departmental records and union newsletters. The most informative series on the employees' relationship with Jeep management is found in the Willys department subject files. Schedules, work assignments, job descriptions and interoffice memos illuminate the daily workings of this plant.

Another organization well represented in this collection is the Society of Designing Engineers. As a national president, Spitulski preserved proceedings and minutes as well as materials from various national conferences. Incoming and outgoing correspondence provide information on the Society's activities and concerns. As a member of the International Apprenticeship Committee of the United Auto Workers, Spitulski also was interested in the apprenticeship system in the skilled trades. Various materials on the Society of Designing Engineers' apprenticeship program outline this program and its training goals.

Other records in the collection show the activities of Local 12 at other Toledo and Northwest Ohio companies as well as Spitulski's individual involvement with the United Auto Workers, Society of Designing Engineers and International Skilled Trades Council. Correspondence found in the collection deals with exchanges between Spitulski and these organizations.

The subject files, one of the largest record groups, contain departmental files consisting of work assignments, job descriptions and correspondence from Jeep. Various engineering reports and reports on engineering layoffs at Jeep describe engineering wages and benefits. Several time studies conducted by the Research and Engineering Division of the United Auto Workers at the various Northwest Ohio companies are included.

A survey report of offices at the Dana Corporation outlines the job classification of union and nonunion white collar workers and efforts to unionize the white collar workers. Also contained in the collection are several other United Auto Workers' surveys and a report to the Toledo Labor Management Citizens Committee. A small number of agreements found in the collection are between Local 12 and Willys Jeep as well as the Ford Motor Company. Scrapbook materials such as newsletters and newsclippings add information on union activities during the 1950s and 1960s.

Union bulletins, trade publications and materials on the United Auto Workers apprenticeship program are among the printed material in the collection. Various agreements between the United Auto Workers and local companies as well as the United Auto Workers constitution are located within this collection.

Finally, a small number of black and white photographs depict various individuals possibly at the Jeep Plant. These are of little research value, however, as they are unidentified.

The Raymond Spitulski Collection has potential value to the labor historian. Information can be found on the United Auto Workers' involvement with companies in the Toledo area. Also those interested in studying the history of the skilled trades and how they have changed with increased computerization will find some valuable material.

INTERNATIONAL SKILLED TRADES CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS; 1956-1958; Box 1, Folder 4-Folder 7, arranged chronologically. Prepared texts describing the proceedings of the conferences including resolutions, reports and activities of the separate UAW regions.

SOCIETY OF DESIGNING ENGINEERS ANNUAL NATIONAL MEETINGS; 1963-1969; Box 1, Folder 8-Folder 14; arranged chronologically. Proceedings of these annual meetings, including the current agendas and printed minutes of the previous year's meeting. Also contains treasurers reports, committee reports and resolutions being acted upon by the Society.

CONFERENCES AND COUNCILS PROCEEDINGS AND MINUTES; 1953, 1954, 1957, 1959-1963, 1970; Box 1, Folder 15-Box 2, Folder 2; arranged chronologically. This series includes proceedings of a UAW-CIO Engineering Conference as well as the minutes of several other labor-oriented meetings dealing with the concerns of the engineering profession and labor-management relationships.

SOCIETY OF DESIGNING ENGINEERS MINUTES AND LISTS; 1955, 1957-1962, 1965-1966, 1968, 1969, undated; Box 2, Folders 3,4; arranged chronologically. Includes some Board of Trustees minutes and membership lists. These lists provide information on individuals, such as addresses, dues paid, and department at Willys in which they worked.

SOCIETY OF DESIGNING ENGINEERS; 1943, 1951-1969, 1973-1975, 1982, undated; Box 2, Folders 5,6; arranged chronologically. This incoming and outgoing correspondence from the offices of the S.D.E. provides much information on the activities and concerns of this group. Also includes the personal correspondence of Raymond Spitulski, national president of the S.D.E.

Contains correspondence of Carl Daniels (Skilled Trades Advisory Committee) as well as correspondence from and to the UAW-CIO International Skilled Trades Council. The issue of journeymen cards is the most important topic dealt with in this series.
