Biographical / Historical

Dorothy J. (Morrow) Harvey (1914-1955) was a community activist, Democratic supporter, and longtime member of the Greater Toledo chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW).

Mayor Doug DeGood proclaimed February 16, 1978, "Dorothy Harvey Day" to commemorate Harvey's active involvement in humanitarian causes in the Toledo area. She was a member of Mayor DeGood's Lucas County Council on Family Violence, as well as the Battered Women's Task Force. She was one of the oldest active members of the Toledo NOW chapter, joining the group in 1973, and participated in multiple marches across the country to promote the passage of the Equal Rights Ammendment (ERA). On multiple occasions, her activism led her to Washington, D.C. where she lobbied legislators in support of humantarian issues, particularly elder care, and advocated against armament spending. Harvey was actively involved in her parish and was a strong advocate for the ordination of women into priesthood and women's reproductive rights.

Dorothy graduated from Toledo's Libbey High School in 1933. She married Howard Harvey in 1948 and worked as a bookkeeper. A daughter, Dottie Ann, died in infancy. Dorothy Harvey died in 1995.
