Scope and Contents
The Mel Byers collection on recreation and leisure contains material pertaining to the development of recreational leisure in the field of employee services. Byers's Keynotes and conference material for Employee Services at Owens-Illinois, the National Industrial Recreation Association (NIRA) and the National Employee Services Recreation Association (NERSA) are the bulk of the collection material. In addition, Byers's collection of scholarly articles, journals, and newspaper clippings regarding industrial recreation are included.
Biographical / Historical
Mel Byers was a leader in the development of employee services and industrial recreation in the mid-20th Century across the country. Byers illustrious career in employee services at Owens-Illinois Glass in Toledo, Ohio is captured in this collection. Byers was also involved in the National Employee Services and Recreation Association (NERSA), was the Vice President of the National Industrial Recreation Association (NIRA), and was the Executive Director of the Toledo Industrial Recreation Employee Services (TIRES) Council.
