Scope and Contents
The records of Millwrights Local 1359 document the history of this local union from 1948 to 1978. The records are rather scattered, but can be of some use to the labor historian.
The minutes of Local 1359 are not to be found in this collection except for the 1955-1957 unit minutes from those members employed at the Thyer Manufacturing Company. The District Council minutes are more complete, documenting union concerns from 1957-1969. Also within the collection are scattered minutes of the Board of Trustees of the Carpenters Pension Plan.
The general correspondence of Local 1359 spans the years 1956-178. Additional correspondence detailing the evolution and adoption of the pension plan is available for 1965-1978. Agreements between area businesses and Local 1359 are relatively complete from the mid-1950s through the mid-1970s. Specific contract disputes can be traced within the negotiation files for 1970-1975. Those researchers especially interested in labor pension plans will find that the Local 1359's records are relatively complete on this subject for the 1960s.
Financial records also are scattered and are mostly comprised of dues records, listed by company for the years 1968-1969, and a dues ledger, 1954-1957. Miscellaneous pamphlets, membership applications, and tax forms complete this collection.
