Judge Nicholas J. Walinski, Jr. papers provide a glimpse into the administrative dealings of Judge Walinski’s courtroom. The collection includes general, hospital, prisoner, and Department of Justice correspondence from 1970 to 1992, his meeting minutes from the United States District Court of Northern Ohio, 1991 to 1992, and his appointment calendars from 1983 to 1992. The bulk of the papers were court cases from 1969 to 1991. The rest of the collection features miscellaneous administration materials, such as seminars, Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals notes, administrative reports, a list of cases, and memorandum and opinion orders from 1973 to 1989.

Biographical / Historical

Born in 1920 in Toledo, Ohio, Judge Nicholas J. Walinski, Jr. was a United States Navy lieutenant during and after World War II , from 1942 to 1948 and served as a Naval Reserve Captain from 1948-1971 Walinski received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toledo in 1949 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toledo College of Law in 1951. His legal career began as an assistant law director for the City of Toledo (1953-1958), after which he was elected to serve as a municipal judge for the City of Toledo (1958-1964) and a Court of Common Pleas judge for Lucas County, Ohio(1964-1970).

Walinski was nominated by President Richard Nixon on October 7, 1970, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio vacated by Judge Girard Edward Kalbfleisch. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 13, 1970, and received his commission on October 21, 1970. He assumed senior status on December 1, 1985. Walinski served in that capacity until his death on December 24, 1992.

The collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections on September 1993 by Marci Caignani from Toledo, Ohio. Additional donations were made in September 2016 by Catherine Goddu from Perrysburg, Ohio.
