Maidie Norman scrapbooks, 1913-1995
The first scrapbook provides details on Norman’s acting career. The motion picture, The Well, for which she received critical acclaim, is discussed and critiqued. The rest of the scrapbook follows her career in film, stage, and finally into television. The scrapbook was compiled by Lecil D. Wills, from the Archives of the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the A. C. Bilbrew Black Resource Center of the Los Angeles County Library. The second scrapbook, created by Norman, begins in 1913, and documents her life and acting career through the 1980s as well as her time spent teaching at Stanford University and acting in the Stanford Repertory Theater. The third scrapbook, also created by Norman, provides a chronological look at the awards she received during her lifetime, including the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame Award (1977) and the Ohioana Career Award (1995), and also depicts her interest in painting and quilting.

This series materials related to Jan Wahl’s involvement with the Gish Film Theater at Bowling Green State University. Wahl had a life-long interest in films and filmmaking and served on its National Advisory Committee, which assisted in raising money for the theater. For many years, Wahl provided introductory and background material in brief lectures or “film introduction” prior to matinees held at the theater, and this series contains his notes for those events, as well as similar introductions he provided for a variety of cultural organizations, including the Sylvania Senior Center, the Way Public Library, and the Toledo Museum of Art. The collection also contains a number of intertitles and translations of text from foreign silent films, several other written works (including an unpublished children's book on the Gish sisters), and assorted images of actresses including Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, and Dorothy Gish.
