Congregation History

St. Stephen Catholic Church began as a Station of Tiffin in 1837. In 1844, service of the parish was transferred to Peru. Their first church was built in 1845 and the status of the parish changed to a Mission. In 1860, the Mission care was transferred to New Washington. In 1871, the parish received their first resident pastor, Father Jacob Ringele. In 1885, their present church was built. Between 1894 and 1951, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Attica was a Mission of St. Stephen. In 1980, St. Stephen became a sister parish of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Republic, Ohio.
