Scope and Contents
Scrapbooks containing the big band collection of William Ulrich, including photographs of big band performers, some of which are signed, and other big band memorabilia. Scrapbooks contain photographs and headshots of big band members, many signed, as well as articles on band members, postcards, and an illustrated photograph. Most photographs are of well-known bandleaders, vocalists, or performers, though there are a handful of photographs and postcards of all-female bands in both scrapbooks. All photographs seem to be from the 1930s-1970s.
Biographical / Historical
William Ulrich was the chair of the history department at John Carroll University near Cleveland, OH and was a specialist in American history, including the Civil War and reconstruction. In addition to his academic work, Ulrich was a big band fan and collector.
