Scope and Contents

This collection consists predominantly of audio reels of folk and folk-rock music that were recorded by A.V. Shirk in the 1960s and 70s in the Columbus, Ohio area. Artists recorded include Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger who performed at The Ohio State University. Other recordings included are locally and nationally known folk musicians including Joan Gibbons, Frank Miller, Chuck White, Paul Gillingham, A.L. Lloyd, Danny O’Dea, Irv Shrager, Dave Suchman, Bart Singer, John Wynne, and others. Live performances were generally recorded at local venues Larry’s bar the Sacred Mushroom in the Columbus area; some reels also contain content edited for presentation or radio broadcast. There is some paper documentation including recordist's notes, personnel and song lists, and other information.

Biographical / Historical

Albin Vineyard Shirk (known as A.V. Shirk) was born April 8, 1938. Shirk attended The Ohio State University in the late 1950s. After graduating he worked at the Columbus Dispatch in the Classified Advertising Department. In the 1960’s, Shirk became an assistant music programming director at WOSU-Radio, where he programmed music as well as produced a radio show in the early 1960s. During this time, he recorded folk and protest music around OSU, including in venues like Larry’s Bar and the Sacred Mushroom coffeehouse.
