Record Sleeves Collection
Collection Overview
Scope and Contents
Collection contains examples of commercial sleeves for 45rpm and 78rpm discs, as well as inner sleeves for LPs. For many labels, this collection contains a series of sleeves spanning different time periods, locations, and types of music. Taken together, the collection illustrates the history and development of this piece of record marketing. Some sleeves contain advertisements for albums, series, or artists in the label's catalog, others contain information about the label or imagery and design that speak to the label's marketing efforts in a particular time and/or place. In addition to commercial sleeves from record companies, which make up the bulk of the collection, there are also examples of record sleeves advertising record shops, retail stores, manufacturers of turntables and gramophones, and other similar businesses. In addition, each series contains a folder of miscellaneous sleeves, contanining generic sleeves not printed with the name of a record label, sleeves printed in non-Latin scripts, and sleeves that contain more than one record label.
