Scope and Contents
The Shirley T. Hailstock Papers include versions of manuscripts for some of the author's earliest published works, providing researchers with great insight into the editing and publishing process. The manuscripts for her first two romance novels, Clara's Promise and White Diamonds are heavily annotated by the author and her editors, illustrating changes both major and minor.
Included with most of the novels is correspondence from Hailstock's editors. In some cases it is purely administrative, but several of the letters provide plot and content notes beyond what the editor wrote in the manuscript.
Also included are galley proofs both bound and unbound, illustrating the last steps before publication. The bound copies in particular prodive researchers with a chance to trace the evolution of Hailstock's ideas and writing to their natural conclusion.
Final print copies of each of the books for which there are manuscripts can be found in the collection of the Browne Popular Culture Library.
