Scope and Contents
The Ludima Gus Burton Papers consist of manuscripts and subject files that date from 2000-2005. The manuscripts include handwritten drafts of novels, manuscripts, edited manuscripts and galleys. These documents reflect the entire process of writing a novel - from first draft to the final manuscript. Ludima Gus Burton's research notes and worksheets are also included, giving the researcher a complete picture of the total writing and publication process.
Also included are two newspaper articles about the author which will give the researcher a personal perspective on the author.
Biographical / Historical
Ludima Gus Burton was born on April 28, 1920 in Farrell, Pennsylvania and graduated from Farrell High School in 1938. She attended Hunter College in New York and Albany State Teacher's College (now SUNY) and received her B.A. in 1945. She taught high school social studies and English in upstate New York until her retirement in 1978. Ludima and her husband, Guy, were married from 1945 until his death in 1981.
In 1991, at 71 years old, Ludima began her second career as an author of “sweet” romances for young adults. She was a charter member of Saratoga Romance Writers (SRWA), developing lifelong friendships and perfecting her craft. In 1999, at age 80, she published her first book, “Only for a Year,” followed quickly by “The Tycoon and the School Teacher” (2000), “The Love Potion” (2001), “The Wedding Cake” (2005), “A Surgeon’s Miracle” (2007), “The Christmas Ball” (2008), “Never a Cougar” (2010), “Drew Gets it Right” (2011) and “Wife: Lost and Found” (2013). Her final book, “His Son, Her Daughter” (2014) was published shortly before her death in 2014.
Ludima Gus Burton died on July 23, 2014, at the age of 94.
