Biographical / Historical

Romance writer Dixie Browning (born 1930) is a prolific author who has published more than 80 contemporary and historical romance novels. She has also written historical novels, written with her sister Mary Burrus Williams under the pen name of Bronwyn Williams.

Browning began her writing career in 1976 with a weekly newspaper column and from there moved on to romance writing. She says that she has had no formal training to be an author, only a love of good stories.

Browning's book Unreasonable Summer (1980) was one of the first authors to be published under the Silhouette brand name. White Witch (1988), written with her sister under the Bronwyn Williams, was one of the first books published by Harlequin under its historical line.

She has given a number of workshops for the Romance Writers Association and has won a number of awards for her writing including a RITA from the Romance Writers of America in 1983 for Renegade Player, three Maggies for best historical of the year, seven top awards from the North Carolina Press Club and five first place awards from the National Federation of Press Women.

In addition to being a published author, Browning is an accomplished watercolor artist. She also helped organize the North Carolina Watercolor Society and served as its first president. She currently lives in North Carolina.
