The Helen Barolini Papers consist of typed, edited manuscript materials for Barolini's novel, Love in the Middle Ages (published 1986). This includes one complete draft of the novel and two incomplete draft excerpts. The collection also includes edited manuscripts for eight short stories by Barolini. These short stories are arranged by the handwritten pagination at the top of the draft pages. Although the creation dates of these short stories are unknown, six of the eight short story titles were published in Barolini's short story collection More Italian Hours, and Other Stories (published 2001).

Biographical / Historical

Helen Barolini (1925-2023) is an American writer of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Born in Syracuse, New York, Barolini received her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and her Masters in Library Science from Columbia University in 1959. Sh has also received credentials from the University of Florence. Throughout her career, Barolini worked as a teacher, editor, librarian, feature writer, and translator.

Barolini has been recognized for her exploration of the Italian American experience in her literary work, including but not limited to the experience of Italian American women. Her anthology, The Dream Book: An Anthology of Writings by Italian American Women (1985), won an American Book Award and a Susan Koppelman Award from the Popular Culture Association.
