Scope and Contents
The bulk of the collection are 27 record cartons containing the photographic archives of Romantic Times Magazine from its founding in 1981 through the late 1990s when the bulk of the magazine's production was done digitally. The folders within each box are organized alphabetically by the last name of the individual. The contents of each folder vary, ranging from a single item to multiple folders relating to a single author. The folders retain their original order and reflect the orgnaization scheme of the creators.
Several boxes of materials have not yet been inventoried, but are accessible to researchers. They include:
A collection of CDs contains photographs, magazine layouts and other items related to the print edition of the magazine, which ceased publication in 2016 and went entirely online.
An assortment of videotapes containing local television segments about romance, including features about model Fabio and the 1997 plagiarism controversy that involved Janet Dailey admitting to copying Nora Roberts.
The magazine held annual conventions for readers and authors as well. The collection includes a number of videotapes from these conventions, including several years of the Mr. Romance Cover Model Contest.
Biographical / Historical
Romantic Times was created by Kathryn Falk in 1981 at the beginning of a boom time in the romance publishing industry. The magazine was printed until 2016, when it went online-only. The online version of the website was updated until May 2018.
The magazine went through a number of different iterations. From 1981-2002, it was known only as Romantic Times. From 2002-2006, it was known as Romantic Times Bookclub. Finally, from 2006 to 2016 it was known as Romantic Times Book Reviews. The print publication was ended in 2016 and the magazine existed in online-only form at rtbookreviews.com until May 2018.
The company also published a non-romance book review magazine called Rave Reviews, which was published for 29 issues from 1986-1991.
